Wild Last of Us Mod Turns It Into a First-Person Game
An ambitious modder for
The Last of Us Part 1 showcases how the game would look and play like within a
first-person perspective.
A rather ambitious modder overhauls The Last of Us
Part 1 to accommodate for a first-person perspective. This mod was
showcased in a new video that showcased the game's encounters within this new
viewpoint. This mod was possible due to the PC port of The
Last of Us Part 1 from earlier this year, and the modding
community has been rather busy ever since its release.
Much like other PlayStation exclusives that got PC ports in the
last few years, the modding community for The Last of Us on PC
has been rather active. The mods include one that allows players to go through
the game as a beloved Last of
Us NPC Bill, and another that overhauls the combat
encounters to be more difficult or make things more realistic. This
first-person mod was created by Voyagers Revenge, who similarly created some
mods for the game that tweaked some of the battle scenarios. Their latest mod
showcase is rather cinematic, taking the realistic and gritty edge of the game
to a whole new level when experienced in first-person.

The video is a showcase of the game's brutal encounters, where
they fight through hordes of the Infected in familiar areas. This
includes Bill's town,
where fans are treated to the sight of walking around through the eyes of Joel,
wielding a variety of weapons. The video also aims to make things as cinematic
as possible, making things intentionally tense with edits spliced around to the
beat of the droning music. The new perspective and cinematic touches make
things feel more like a survival-horror game than before.
The mod does end up shifting POVs sometimes, such as when Joel
gives Ellie a boost, where it changes to the normal third-person perspective to
show her being taken up to the top of the bus. The cutscenes are also similarly
not rendered in first-person, likely to keep the story pace flowing naturally
and not to disorient the player, despite the cutscenes being rendered in
real-time as opposed to the pre-rendered videos of The Last of Us' PS3 and PS4 versions.
This mod for the PC version is still in development, with no
release window currently slated yet. This mod for The Last of Us Part 1 was
also possible thanks to a variety of tools from the community, which the modder
credits in the description. Fans who saw this showcase were very impressed with
Voyager's work, with many wanting to play this mod for themselves, or hope that
Naughty Dog will implement something similar in the future.
The Last of Us Part 1 is
currently available for PC and PlayStation 5.
